About Me
I have a passion for playing the djembe. It has now been about 20 years since playing the djembe. I remember the time when I bought my first djembe, thinking I knew how to play it. The reason behind that thought is that I will always find myself playing drums on tables, door frames, buckets, etc, etc… so naturally I thought I could incorporate that style of playing on a djembe… how wrong I was.
I was sitting on a bench on a grassy area outside my flat in London, trying to play this djembe of mine. What proceeded to happen, was this guy came to me and said to me, ‘You play the djembe like this.’ He crouched down and showed me a rhythm, not to teach me but as a demonstration. He then told me that the djembe has 3 Tones for playing and he demonstrated them for me… and off he went. From that time on I played my djembe nearly every day, learning how to combine these Tones and incorporating the rhythms I already had with them.
After about a year, I was playing my djembe on the streets in public. I wasn’t just playing rhythms; I was also singing with them. (I was singing publicly before playing) To this day now I am still singing and playing in different towns and cities. At times I am invited to play at weddings and functions.
