‘SLAP SOUND’

The 3 Tones

Beginners will learn the basic techniques of the 3 Tones. These Tones are sound that are made when striking the djembe in specific places of the drum and the position of the hand. The base, slap and tone (BST) sound.

Hands & Wrists

Your hands and wrists positioning should be relaxed to avoid strain and pain. When striking the djembe your hand should be light and with control. The djembe has its own sound and should require careful strikes on specific places on the drum for comfortable playing.

Practise Techniques

Using sound and rhythm, you will play slowly to develop muscle memory. You will be using exercises for each hand to work alternatively for strength and fluidity. A versatile way of helping you with the rhythm; is counting the beats and clapping to set the rhythm.

Introduction of the Djembe. You will understand the anatomy of the djembe, the skin and the type of wood, also the body the head and the base and their function.

Solo Techniques

If you are more advanced in playing the djembe, you will learn how to improvise around the base rhythm using different techniques.

RaphaRhythm

You will learn how different places of the djembe intertwine to create a more complex rhythm structure.

Posture & Position of the djembe

You will learn the importance of your posture when playing the djembe, mainly when in a sitting position. What position the djembe should be when playing.

Performance

Here you will showcase your skills either as a soloist or in a group. This will allow you to enjoy solo or group performances.
